We got off the ship and wandered around for a bit. We went in search of, and found, the church, St. Johns Cathedral, which was cool – the woodwork was amazing. According to the various websites, it’s been rebuilt a few times and is constantly under renovations. Afterwards, we kept wandering, seeing what we could find. The town, once you got past the stuff immediately around the port, was super rough.

It’s always cool to see what I call “where the people live” in a place. I feel like sometimes all the tours and excursions only take you to the pretty places, which are nice and all, but they don’t give you a sense of what it’s really like to live there. Walking the streets with the stray dogs and chickens pecking the ground, seeing the old, rusted out cars and corrugated steel walls… THAT is where the people live. And what we like to see.

After seeing the streets and finding a random, not-very-pretty beach at the end of a random street, we headed back towards the port to find some food.

We stumbled upon lunch at a place called Big Banana, where we sampled the local Wadadli beer (was pretty good!) and I had jerk chicken and Matt had some awesome grilled fish. The plates were huge, and we were stuffed.

We worked our way back to the ship via the Heritage Quay, this cool little shopping center near the docks that’s in old historic, very well preserved buildings. They say the shopping there is some of the best in the Caribbean. We really wouldn’t know, we’re not huge shoppers! It was pretty to walk through, though, and the views of our ship were awesome.

After ice cream and a nap in our cabin, we went to the Passport Bar for a drink before dinner. I hadn’t had a cosmo in a long time, and it was really good! Later that evening, after dinner, we went to the Sky Lounge for a nightcap – we’re slowly ticking off all those bars!

Tomorrow, St. Lucia!
