This was the summer, the summer of 2024, that we learned to sail. We started off taking a class down at Blue Water Sailing School in Ft. Lauderdale (more about that here and here!), and came back to Colorado all fired up to cut our teeth on our own and hone our skills.
We found this pretty cool organization, the Victoria Sailing School, that runs the Why Buy Club. As its name states, buying a boat, paying for storage, gas, and upkeep in general is NOT cheap. This club allows you to pay for a membership, use boats whenever you want, and that’s it. Why Buy? They have different levels of membership, so there’s something for everyone.
We started off going to Cherry Creek State Park our first couple times out, where the lake is tiny and there aren’t too many people there. After tooling around there a couple times, we decided to broaden our horizons.

The next couple times we went out, we headed to Chatfield. MUCH bigger lake, and way more people. Unfortunately, every time we went out, we had very little wind, so we didn’t get to do much more than bob around in other people’s wake… So there was that.

Then there was the time we took it up the hill to the mountains and Lake Dillon, which was a whole adventure in itself. In fact, we made a whole video and blog post of that one, check them out here.
The season ended fairly quietly, with us having a tiny bit more experience than when we started. I do believe we’ve created a monster – Matt spends plenty of time looking at boats to buy – so yeah. Gotta keep feeding the dream!
